Native Forward – Health Insurance for Native American Families in Oklahoma
Members of federally recognized tribes have special protections and benefits when they enroll in health insurance through the Marketplace (HealthCare.gov). Many families do not know these benefits exist, or how they work alongside Indian Health Service and tribal clinics. We’ve helped Native American families across Oklahoma use them since 2014.
What benefits are available?
Members of federally recognized tribes may qualify for:
- Zero cost-sharing plans: For household incomes at or below 300% of the federal poverty level, no deductible, copays, or coinsurance on covered services
- Limited cost-sharing plans: At any income, no out-of-pocket costs for care from an Indian Health Service, tribal, or urban Indian health provider
- Low or $0 monthly premiums: Depending on income and available tax credits
- Monthly enrollment: You can enroll or change plans once a month, not just during Open Enrollment
Do I still need insurance if I use IHS or a tribal clinic?
Indian Health Service isn’t health insurance, and it can’t always cover specialists, hospital stays, or care far from home. A Marketplace plan works alongside your IHS or tribal clinic. You can keep using your clinic and also have coverage for care it can’t provide. Using your clinic doesn’t cost you your Marketplace benefits.
What about SoonerCare?
Depending on household income, you or your children may qualify for SoonerCare, Oklahoma’s Medicaid program, instead of a Marketplace plan. Families sometimes have a mix, with children on SoonerCare and parents on a Marketplace plan. We will help you figure out what each person qualifies for.
What do I need to apply?
You will typically need proof of tribal membership, such as a tribal enrollment card or CDIB, plus income information for your household. We will walk you through the application, including the tribal membership questions and any documents the Marketplace asks for, so your benefits are applied correctly.
Does it cost more to use an agent?
No. Our help is free, and your premium is the same whether you enroll on your own or through us. Plan networks vary, so we will also check that your doctors and hospitals are included.
