Don't Be Fooled By Robo-Scam Calls

The first step in protecting against phony health insurance scams is understanding how they work.

To help people get a better understanding, we’re breaking down some of the newest and most popular health insurance scams.

The Call:

You’ve probably received multiple calls from what appears to be a local number and you get a recording that says something like this:

“You may already know effective January 1st of this year, federal law requires that all Americans have health insurance.

If you missed open enrollment, you can still avoid tax penalties and get coverage during the special enrollment period, often at little or no cost to you.”

The calls may say something to suggest that they are with the Healthcare Marketplace and if you don’t get coverage you will be fined.

The may also offer you a plan that seems way too good to be true.

The Scam:

The scammers take advantage of your confusion over how Obamacare works.  They use Robo-calls to makes mass calls trying to gain your personal information including social security number, bank info, date of birth and your address.   With this information they can create fraudulent credit card accounts and steal your identity.

Because the insurance you thought they offered you was bogus or does not meet the minimum essential coverage guidelines, you also are penalized for being uninsured come tax time.

What you should know:

A pre-recorded greeting is a red flag that the call is questionable and a sign that the call is coming from a Robo-dialer.

The Healthcare Marketplace does not call to sell insurance plans and they do not make cold calls asking for personal information.

Remember if something sounds too good to be true it probably is.
